Art & Soul Virginia: Dream House/Gypsy House

Posted on January 19, 2010 - Filed Under Uncategorized

This week I am one of the featured artists for Art & Soul in Hampton, Virginia, and Glenny is offering a 20% discount on my classes. Click here for that offer.

Leave a comment here under one of the posts for VA, and on the 29th I will pick one to win a big box of goodies from my studio.

The second class is Dream Houses. These houses were in Somerset Studio a bit over a year ago, and I love making them. They start with a base of binders board, foam core and wood, and then are covered with paper (my paste papers) and sheet copper. I add hammered copper tubing, and sometimes wrap that with brass wire and milagros, then add charms and other shiny things. You will be given kits for two houses, big fun!DH4

This gal is cold, so I sent her to live in California by the beach with my friend Mary Stanley. These three were in the magazine. They are my Nana and her sister, my daughter Sydney, and a dreamy girl I like to think of as me. On the roofs of the houses are carved floor plans of the houses each of us love, and some words about them. There are little charms and doodads added at the end.

dreamhousesfinalThis one is from a series called “Love Letters”. I think the guy got jilted by a woman he met at  the shore. His broken heart is carved into the roof.

DH.2

This weekend I got a little carried away and made a house for a gypsy. Gypsies do not typically live in houses, but this one does. She has it all done up with ribbons and beads. Her heart is full of longing, and her roof shows the crossroads she has recently faced. DH172The supply lists are short, and both classes are fun fun fun. Please check out the Participant’s Comments at the top of the page to read my shamelessly solicited comments from lovely people who have taken my classes. Thanks for stopping by!

    Jill -
I’ve loved your classes at Art & Soul (Hampton) and Art Unraveled, so when registration opened for Hampton this year I signed right up for both of your classes. Too early for the discount, but very much looking forward to seeing you and learning new art techniques! You make your classes fun and send the participants away with new skills and a million ideas for creating more projects!

I Love these little houses. I have always believed that houses have souls and I see the lovely souls that reside in your little houses!

    Hi Jill,
I’m so glad I signed up for the Dream Houses. I’m always dreaming of houses anyway and using the house image in other work, and now I can make them under your guidance. This class is a perfect way for me to use diverse materials and get a little more “content” in my work. I’d like to create a “winner’s” house so maybe that will happen!
    Hopefully,
    Lynne

I too love your dream houses. Hopefully I’ll be able to take a class with you at some point. I live in Houston, Texas. Maybe we can invite you to come to Houston to teach! That would be lovely. Thanks for including me in your drawing – much appreciated.

  32. lynda Abare on January 26th, 2010 2:43 pm

Jill-Your imagination is delightful as evidenced by these wonderful, whimsical houses and their equally intriguing inhabitants. I am especially fond of the gypsy habitat surrounded by all her favorite things – beads, ribbons, an embossed metal roof and a window/door to the outside world. We gypsies can be very claustrophobic! This class sounds like a lot of FUN. I know you and your lucky students will enjoy Art & Soul, Virginia. ~lynda

Are you going to be teaching in Portland 2010? Your detail work is amazing and you have added so much whimsey to each house. Plus I love the stories that go along with each house!!!

Wouldn’t that be a great blog giveaway gift!!!!

Well I thought I had all my workshops picked out for Hampton and along comes Dream Houses. I’ve labored over this for a week now because I had my eye on another class.

Dream Houses speaks to me and I’ve decided to take your workshop and I’m really excited. I’ve already chosen my photos. Will it be possible to purchase supplies for additional houses? Now that I’ve made my decision my mind is spinning.

    Love your blog.
