School Vacation

Posted on November 29, 2009 - Filed Under About me

The kids have been out of school for nine days. Here are some of the adventures we have had.
Tattoo parlor games, the day before the annual photo appointment. Sydney was very creative and careful, and Sam was so quiet I should have known something was going on. What was I thinking? Quiet in our house always means trouble.

Gorgeous, yes? Full of symbolic meaning, chromatically pleasing and thought provoking. At first I thought it was just Sam all done up, turns out they both were. Sydney managed to hide hers until swim time the next day.

Three showers and three hours in a chlorinated pool later we were ready  for pictures.

Picture day was also the day Sydney donated her hair to Locks of Love. She has been growing it to the requisite 10″ length, and both of us were ready to lose the locks to a worthy cause. I wanted to see her face again.

Her stylist Amanda moved right along. She has done this before. She took a photo of Sydney with her detached braids, and then finessed the hair that was left.

Here she is, Sydney Erin Berry. The gift of her hair and heart was sent off to a child who needs it, and I am filled with pride. This is MY girl, who had this idea and saw it through. Warm, warm fuzzies.

We left the salon and drove right into the middle of CU Buffs football traffic. It took us 45 minutes to go six miles to the photo studio and Sydney had to change clothes in the car. The entire way I should have been glad that this was rare in my current life, but after singing some songs and chatting, I got a bit whiny:  I just detest sitting on the freeway. Finally we arrived at the photo studio at Target, rid of tattoos and braids and traffic. Voila! It is amazing what transformation can happen in a day.

Kids2009At home that night we played Mexican Train and ate guacamole. I was tired, and done with the frenetic pace of this kind of day. Yet, I know deep in my heart that it is a special treasure, and that I will one day look back and want it, crave it again. Tripping over puppies, scrubbing Sharpie tattoos, rushing around for haircuts and photos of the shining, pure, exquisite faces of my darlings.

Beautiful children, beautiful days…and you’re so right. You will miss the controlled chaos. Sometimes in the midst of my glorious alone time a flash of a memory will sneak up and bite me in the butt and cause my heart to burst.

Your kids are beautiful, Jill! Sounds like they’re as creative as you are, too. :D
