Oh Pioneers
Posted on November 3, 2009 - Filed Under Uncategorized
I was driving home from my den in Nebraska, finally released to clear open roads , and I thought of my pioneer ancestors crossing this same prairie on foot, in wagons and on horses. My great, great grandmother kept a diary of this event in her life, so we have a real record of what it was like. Imagine the flatness, the raw weather, the drudgery of the prairie and then suddenly, off in the horizon, the great Rocky Mountains. From flat to fourteeners, abruptly.
I want to be as brave as those explorers who kept right on going. What I want is the wonder of it all not to be a thing of the past, but still for this sight to continue to unsettle and thrill me. What do I do now? North? South? Right on over the top?
The roads were clear. I made it home. Along the way I did not give birth, or bury a loved one or die myself. Thankfully.

That picture looks exactly like those we painted when we were down in Springfield for your class…I’m sure it’s wonderful to be home, but also what an adventure for you as well.
