Our Art Room
The San Diego Book Arts guild invited me to teach and lecture back in my hometown. That was such a huge treat. Joanna (Mom), Jan, Phyllis, Sue, Yvonne, Noël, Sharon, Regina, Nancy, Joy, Trudy, Sara, Liz, and I had a wonderful time painting and making books in a new arts complex where the Navy base used to be. We had Trader Joe’s and Starbucks right across the street, and the weather was fine. It was an energized, friendly, interesting and warm group of women we had there.
I stayed with Josie and Al Rodgriguez in a cute-as-a-button cottage next to Al’s Studio. They are both artists, and are leading a workshop in Italy next summer, together. Check that out here.

My room was full of art and books, and the yard outside my door was filled with plumeria, and hummingbirds.

One morning a hummer did a fly-by buzz in my face, and then stopped to let me gaze at him. Show off.
Al and Josie are lovely people, and treated me to wonderful meals and conversation.
We painted all day on Saturday.
Dried our papers in the sun.
Painted some more

At the end of a long and colorful messy wonderful day, my mom, Jan, Phyllis, Al, Josie and I went for a picnic on the beach.

These are the moments I have to be wildly grateful for. My mom, the sky, these generous people, the privilege of doing what I love and having the sea breeze too, and then, to top it all off, smoked fish from Point Loma Seafood. Does it get better than this?
Well yes, it does. Here are the beginnings of the books that our class made.
Thank you to all of you who showed up. Thank you to Al, who invited me, and to Genie Shenk, who was my very first book arts teacher and showed up to hear my lecture at the Anthenaeum, in La Jolla, where took the class from her 20 years ago.
If any of you would like me to post your books, I am more than happy to! You can see Jan and Noël’s books in my previous post, check out the wonder of them….

Jill, this looks like it was an amazing trip… and where you stayed??? I want to live in that little cottage forever. I hope the energy you felt on your trip followed you back home to Colorado, I’ve been thinking of you and sending all positive and loving thoughts your way…. xoxoxo
Your photos are lovely; your talent immense, and your generous spirit make me even more proud of my daughter.
Love,
Mom
For a complete novice and hyper-ventilating attendee, I had a wonderful time. Thank you. Phyllis
It looks like a lovely time!
Hi Jill,
I just sent your blog to the rest of the group. You did a fabulous job. Thanks for your kind words and a plug for Italy. Josie’s out of town and will be thrilled to see what you’ve done when she returns. She’s been staying up late figuring out this blog thing. Thanks for your inspiration.
