I am getting ready for a class in San Diego, actually two classes, and can’t get my act together at all. I am usually ready far ahead of time, but this week, and last, have been mightily distracting. In the interest of art, cartography and paint, I created this piece of paste paper, which to me looks like a magical place where I might find myself. It is the birds-eye view of my own personal wonderland, where everyone has a job, and health, and health care, automatically. And no one has learning disabilities, the water is clean and drinkable, and most of the time there is spent in rapturous joy!

Paste-map-of-KansasIn San Diego we will be painting a book, and binding it up with wood, metal charms and stones. I really love this class, and will post the wonders that come from it next week. I get to see some friends, my family, and the ocean, and that is just what I need.

Last night doing laundry I had a profound thought. When I do laundry, I have a bag that I toss socks in. We then pair them up, and always, always end up with what I call “one socks”. Where do they go, the mates to these cotton loners? No one I know can solve this riddle, it is elusive and impossible. The profundity for me came when I realized that this small but constant loss is built into my day. I expect it. I am completely okay with it, and plan for it. Why not expand that expectation into the rest of life? I am going to work on my sock theory, as soon as I have time.

In the meantime we are making yummy food tonight and I am seeing sparkles, in the eyes of my children, and the face of my new puppy.

I love this Jill… gorgeous colors and I am lost in it as well. Maybe we can meet for a glass of wine while we are both lost in the paper? I would so love that…and know that it would be welcome on your side as well….your sock theory, I’m buying in to it and will give some thought as well. Cannot in a million years imagine where they all end up. Have a wonderful trip to San Diego. It will all come together for you, I promise…and once you get there, please smile @ the ocean for me and make a wish.

    xoxoxo

Jill, Don’t you know about the Cosmic Trader? He takes socks and trades them for wire hangers… or whatever
That’s one happy piece of paste paper! I hope you find yourself in a good place in San Diego and that it stays with you for a long time–kind of like the little kid in Peanuts who always had a dark cloud over his head, only for you a brightness. Have fun with your family and at the ocean.

This is a wonderful and amazing piece of paper. It could be the work of art by itself. I hope that San Diego is a great experience and that the sunshine brings new hope. Congratulations on the new puppy. I enjoyed your work in the new Cloth, Paper, Scissors.

I just found the most wonderful book and it will take care of all those lonesome socks. “Stray Sock Sewing” by Daniel. He creates wonderful creatures from these socks so check it out.
