Charming Books

I have spent the last six days with contractors, trying to decide what to do about yet another flood in my basement. My kids are at camp, and next week I teach at ArtUnraveled, so you can imagine that this is not fun time over here. To be honest, I was mopey, whiny and altogether full of self pity.
This morning an email came that informed me that my friend who is 29 has another go round with ovarian cancer. I marched out the door in my sneakers and hiked up the hill and back down, about four miles, thinking about where my place is in this, and what I should be doing. What I should not be doing is whining about something that can be fixed.
So, I spent my day doing calligraphy, and these tiny books. The little person is a Magi, or a magician, and he intends to fix things. Any and all things that need fixing. His story is inside, rolled up in a scroll.
I am trying out a class idea for books that can also be charms. When I was a kid, I just went nuts for tiny books, still do. Here are the rest of them, based on icons that matter to me.
The little book with beads hanging I did for a charm swap for Cloth, Paper, Scissors.

The house is copper, one of my favorite materials to work with.

The bird and the Magi head are made of polymer clay. The wings of the bird are also a scroll book.

Here is what is inside:
It is said that the most offensive thing in the universe is not to use your gifts. I think this is true. Knowing that I have the gift of time, curiosity and materials to work with makes me grateful, albeit never as grateful as I deeply know I should be. It is something I work on.
Today was a good day.

Lovely post, Jill. Thank you.
That little Magi is very groovy. Lovin’ the little books (naturally)! Thanks Jill.
Thank you for the reminder about time and what is important. Interesting that I just finished my first miniature books a few minutes ago and thought I’d check your blog. Timely. Best wishes for your friend.
Love the charms! I’m especially drawn to the bird one. Clever wings!
oh, I am loving that little bird with his scroll wings! SO sorry I missed you in San Diego! I heard good things about your workshop!
