Artfest Journal

Posted on April 9, 2009 - Filed Under What I am up to

I went to Artfest as Festal Virgin (the one and only time I can say that) and came back as a UberFester. It was a huge adventure, starting from the ride in the purple rental car with my new friend Lori, all the way through the classes and being retrieved by my brother Andrew and his new girlfriend Susan. Mighty good time.

This is my Artfest Journal. Some journals I make are site-specific, meaning they are about just one place. In this case,  I journal flat, and make the book when I get home. The reason I do this is because it is easy to deal with. One page does not weigh anything, so it all fits in my daily supplies for whatever class I do. I use gel pens, then fill in the colors with Pitt markers. My whole kit could fit in my shoe, or nearly anyway. The paper is Fabriano Artistico HP 140, everyone’s fav.

library-18736This page is from Katie Kendrick’s class, “Symbols Shaping Space”. It was a wonderful class, full of rich techniques that Katie generously shared. The woman is a goddess; she gave us SO much. Big fancy bags full of things she had prepared, including a custom wire holder/pin cushion she made for each of us. Being a teacher, I recognize the effort she made. Impressive. And she is so warm and lovely to be with.

library-18737this is page 2. I had to wait for those deer that walk funny to cross the road, so I put them on a map.

library-18738Michael Peterson’s doll class was what my girl, Sydney, picked out for me to take. She thinks I need to surprise myself, broaden my horizons. Those horizons spread out in this one, for certain. It was way harder than I had expected!

I will post a photo of the finished journal in a few days. The pages are all ready to be bound!

    Hey Jill,

I just noticed your note and signed onto your blog. How fun! The rendition of our “home” is quite special – I really like it.

Later tonight, I’ll have more time to look more closely at your posts. Right now, I have to chase down our border collie puppy, Jack. He had his ***### removed yesterday and is supposed to hang inside without running around (if you know anything about these guys, you’ll know how difficult that is. Anyway, he escaped when I opened the door to retrieve something (more about the “something” later)from the car.

    Jill,
Would you send me the names of the ladies in the dorm photo? I have a copy of it from my own camera.
I really enjoyed your photos. I got some wonderful shots of kelp and rocks at the beach one morning. The sun was just right.
    Have a great Spring.

Hey Jill…finally found your blog and the sketch of the “kissy fish”. Well done. And…..I’m flattered that he made your favorite trades list.
Love your blog – you do beautiful work! Many years ago I got a “start” in art in my adult life with calligraphy. So, I know the art of the letter….and your hand is fantastic.
    Blessings,
    Cheryl.
