Fort Worden Warning Map

I am going to Artfest for the first time this year. It is a very last minute decision and, amazingly, it is coming together. Against all sane thinking I signed up to do the Fatbook, which has a theme of Artfest and Sea Monsters. This is the map I am making for my pop-page for the fatbook. The robot me is dangling from the cartouche, surrounded by threatening creatures. Freud would have a field day with this, even I can. Do you think I might be a tad nervous about going? Why is that? Food for thought.
John Held Jr. is one of my favorite pictorial map makers. He was a really funny magazine illustrator in the 1920s, and he made this map of his idea of America. Chock-a-Block full of hot dogs and bootleggers, gas stations and orange drinks. Rum Runners fill his seas.
At the bottom of this map it reads: “After all, no one makes maps quite like John Held Jr., try as they may.” Today I will light a candle to my friend Rebecca, and the confidence of John Held Jr., that both may flourish.
