Making a scene with Mom

Posted on January 4, 2009 - Filed Under 2009 Workshops

I am getting a bit carried away with these little scenes, but it was something I could do fast and easy. This is my mom at the age of five, with what I imagined were her favorite things. Her dog, Little Bit, her pretty dress and matching parasol, rain, fancy gardens, beautiful butterflies and fishing. The scene is wrapped with a map of Paris.

Mom was just here for the week after Christmas. She is a dreamboat of a mom (and I know she is reading this) because she totally supports me, and my artwork. She thinks I am nearly brilliant, and having a mom like that is the luckiest thing in the world. In addition, she is very smart, very funny and a good grandma.

I hope to be the same sort of groupie to kids. It is a hard balance, discipline and unconditional love, at least for me. Maybe someday my kids will take tiny pictures of me and glue them to something. Those of us that do that, like Jane, who made the cover below with her grandmother’s cute face, get why working with content that you love makes a difference in your art. Try it! Go ahead, glue your grandma into your journal or on the shoulders of Athena. I will bet you will look at this far longer that if you cut up Madonna’s mug out of People magazine.

I made more of these, with my kids in them. One for each member of the family. Big hit. I will be teaching a class next year at RAEvN’s Nest Art Retreat called Make a Scene with this technique. Bring your grandma’s mug and I will show you!

Well my friend, you are more then “nearly brilliant”…you are just plain brilliant. LOVE your new creations and cannot wait for Raevn’s Nest AND already signed up for your class at Valley Ridge so that’s only a few months away to look forward to.

Just jumped in to the blogging world (or at least making the attempt since I don’t know what the hell I’m doing) and tossed you in as a link as well… I’m at http://www.wishfulthinking.typepad.com if you want to take a peek.

Happy New Year to you my friend.
