Positively Negative

Sometimes pages of paint get crazy. They just go off and running and pretty soon you have acrylic chaos. I took one of these crazy pages and looked at it like you might look at the clouds: trying to find the hidden pictures and what it might want to say. I painted the negative spaces around the pictures I found, and ended up with this patterned paper. It is just a start, but something I will be working with more, painting in the negatives.
Michelangelo worked with negative spaces, I remember reading that in grad school. He found blocks of marble that spoke to him, and chipped the outside off to let the sculpted piece out. You can see this in his slave series: it actually looks like the unfinished pieces are trying to burst out of the stone.
Carry this over to my day: some icky things happened that I was able to laugh about instead of cry. Lovely. Is that negatively positive, or vise-versa?

Love your positively negative. Very inspiring!
Jill, your expanded blog and additional photos blow me away. Well, not the photos, but the books and all those creative ideas oozing out of them. Can’t wait to make more books with you!
