Wearable Books

wearable-books.jpgI just returned from a weekend of teaching a Wearable Books class in Estes Park at the YMCA. If you have not been there, get thee to the Y! It is a place that fills me, both for the spectacular backdrop of Rocky Mountain National Park, and all that the facility has to offer. There is a wonderful craft center and hundreds of cabins to cozy up in. The staff is exceptional. My class was about making small wearable books with suede, cloth, beads, and papers of all sorts. It was so interesting to see how different the books were based on the same structures (I told the class that was because they clearly did not follow my directions!) and how each person found their own voice. We made five different books and containers to make them wearable, and then I gave them a challenge piece: a small clip on a hook, and asked them to incorporate that into a book. At the end of class we did the reveal of the challenge. wearable-books2.jpg Gail made Hiroshima/Nagasaki book earrings as a tribute to her cousin.  Sarah made a tiny leather scrapbook as a tribute to her grandmother. hiro-earrings.jpgAnd me? I got to spend the weekend with a roomful of wonderful, creative women surrounded by huge snowy mountains. Lucky, lucky me.

    Jill—

Thank you SO much for such a wonderful class and great weekend! I didn’t want it to end. I am currently busily gathering leather scraps, beads, ribbon, etc. and beginning some new editions of “wearable books”! Hope to see you soon!!
