The Big Store

The wind is huge tonight. It is a big Man wind. Nerve twisting, large, loud wind. My daughter looks out, sees things blowing around. She disappears into the garage and returns with a flashlight headband. “I am going to find something outside worth saving.” Her hair is wild and big around her face, and her cheeks are pink. Still, she heads out there and tries to save something, anything. She saves the roof of my birdhouse, to the detriment of her brother’s soccer ball: one has to make choices when two things are blowing away at the same time. The door opens, the wind and Sydney blast in, and she announces with her skinny little arms flung up in a V: “Sydney the great makes another daring rescue!”
When we first moved to Boulder we did not know about the wind. We went to a party at a neighbor’s house, and we noticed a heap of stuff in the backyard. The host said oh yeah, all that is from “the Big Store”. That meant, we found out, anything that the wind blew into your yard. As far as Boulderites are concerned, if the Big Store delivers it to you, you get to keep it. The Big Store has delivered many things from our yard to others, although I doubt in the precise sets they came in. One child-sized table and chairs, sleds of various designs, balls, mittens, and toys have departed our yard. It is likely most of these items arrived fairly unusable to the recipient. Unless, of course, that recipient was an artist.
