Today is my day to tell you about the classes I am teaching in Portland from Sept.

30-Oct 4th, 2013.

I have four classes, and one of them is full, but there is room in the other three. And, I will not be teaching in Portland next year, so if you want to grab a class, now is the time!

Monday, September 30 I am teaching a Visual Journaling Class.

I journal a lot, and my journaling artwork has been in Journal It (Jenny Doh), The Sketchbook Challenge Book (Sue Bleiweiss), The Complete Decorated Journal (Gwen Diehn), Art Journaling Magazine, Somerset Studio and Cloth, Paper, Scissors. In this class we will add dimensional figures, maps, layers, colors, excitement, stories and pzazz to your journals. I bring most everything, so you just show up with a journal! Link to this class is here.

The second class is on Tuesday, Oct 1. It is called “Map to Happy”. This is a painting and mapping class that includes a world of fun, learning to paint by way of abstract and symbolic imagery that leads you to a happy place.

These “maps” can be deconstructed and put into books. Here is the whole map, and then part of it as a book page. A post I did on this process can be found HERE. and in a book by Pam Carriker, HERE.

M2H to book

The last class on Wednesday Oct 2 is a huge treat. It is the Mixed-Media Sea Monster Journal.

I got lots of sponsorship for this class, so the black patent leather kit is filled with treats from PanPastel, Faber Castell, Dreaming in Color and me.

We will experiment with at least 20 kinds of pens, pastels, coloring agents and mediums on 15 kinds of paper. The journal is provided, and is printed with images of sea monsters that turn into a layered journal of goodness that is fun, fun, fun!

You will get a kit of samples of most of the things we use in class.

This is the LAST time for this class, and the last time I will be in Portland for a while, so sign up now!!!

If you leave a comment and tell me what you would like to see me teach next and where, you will get a chance to win a big goodie bag of mixed-media wonders and a copy of the Sketchbook Project to fill with journaling joy.

The Sketchbook Project Journal: More than 300 Ways to Fill a Page

I will pick a winner Sunday, August 25. You have to have a real live email and respond quickly or I will have to skip on to the next lucky winner!

Happy Summer, happy back-to-school, happy Friday!

  1. Perhaps I am a dreamer, but how about teaching in Canada? Perhaps in the beautiful Eastern Townships… The subject matter? I would love to see an integration of maps (geographical or personal) and the travel journal. I am a beginner at both traveling and travel journals and loved my first experience in Europe. Now I am looking forward to expanding my repertoire of ideas!

  2. A map to happy – what more can I wish, than a map to the place where I can be happy! I am afraid I cannot be of much help with the location, as I live in Germany. But if you could make it to Marburg, I would be more than delighted. That sample kit looks so desirable to me, that it makes me sigh, because I know I am not going to win, sigh!
But I wish you the very best for your classes!
    Cheers, Gabriele

  3. I would love for you to be in the sacramento area!
I haven’t taken any of your classes so I would like to take any and all!

  4. I cannot WAIT to take your Visual Journaling class; this is my first time going to A&S. I want to learn about layering and lettering and paint and adhesives, etc etc etc. I’m sure I’m going to get a lot of that in your class. So your next class maybe needs to be Visual Journaling 201? 🙂 In Portland, of course! Seattle is also very, very nice… Thank you for the chance to win something!

  5. Map to Peace! La Crosse, WI!

  6. Jill, Jill please come to Southern California and teach anything from your Personal Geographies book. Maps maps glorious maps I was supposed to attend your classes in VA Beach but had to cancel at the last minute. You are on top of my short list of artists that I have not taken a class with. I would even settle for northern CA. Lol.

  7. Jill, Love to have you teach the journal workshops in Denver area. Sea Monsters looks very intriguing. Levels are definitely the thing! Thanks for sharing.

  8. Gah! Seeing these pictures and the art supplies makes me drool!

I’d love to see you teaching a cool mapping journal class in Rome, Italy. I could see all kinds of map stuff from ancient Rome to contemporary Rome and all kinds of yummy adventures there.

  9. I would love to dip my toe in the pan pastel waters in a class in metro Atlanta and I would love to win the kit. 🙂

  10. I’d love to learn to create work that appears 3D with the glasses on. Please enter me in the drawing. I would love to explore a treasure of mixed media!

  11. Oops… Forgot to say where..how about Austin Tx!!

  12. I would love to take a class from you about map making in the Salt Lake City area. 🙂 Thanks for the great giveaway and I hope you have a fantastic time in Portland!

  13. I am going to make a map to happy today! Love your work. Looking forward to your new book. Lake Bluff IL

  14. How about a class in New Zealand(South island preferably)and if you take me, you can teach anything you want. That’s on my to do list. Take a class with Jill Berry in New Zealand. Or maybe something tropical? An island surrounded by a beautiful blue sea? Class could be “Recording the Daily Exploits of Sea Monsters”. The class would walk the beach, scuba dive, hang out under the cabana and create schedules for sea monsters. If neither of those work out, I would be willing to meet you at the Denver zoo in a Hawaiian shirt, journal in hand and work on some creative interpretation of sea monsters.

  15. I wasn’t able to take any of your class here in Portland this year due to scheduling conflicts, but I hope to catch one of your classes somewhere in Portland.

  16. I would love for you to come back to Art & Soul in VA Beach, VA. I didn’t get a chance to take any of your classes. There was one that interested me, I think it was making a mixed media journal! One can can never have too many journals, right? Thanks for the giveaway. Hope to see you in 2014!

  17. I am brand new to Art journaling and mixed media. I have always drawn and sketched my whole life, but I am excited to discover a new way for me to express myself through this process! I have been unemployed (and looking for work) for a while now and money is pretty tight, not enough to go for art classes and supplies. I would love to attend a class if you ever came up to the Seattle/Bellevue Washington area, and learn more about how to open my mind up learning how to use different medias I have not tried (like watercolor pastels or acrylics, texturing products etc…I am so stuck right now! HELP! I saw your post this morning on FB and I was so excited to see what you do! I wish I could come to Oregon to attend a class! 🙂

  18. Hi Jill, it’s difficult to pick any one class of yours. My sisters have taken your classes and rave about them. If I have to pick, it would be the sumi ink class, pretty much anywhere in the Pac. NWest/West. I’m lucky in that I am able to travel for classes that really catch my interest. See you at A&S, Pamm >.< dragonflyartist (@) gmail (dot) com

  19. We have some wonderful retreat facilities in North Texas near the DFW area!! A series on just how to start is something I’m in great need of. My mind is constantly coming up with ideas but I rarely have the nerve to jump right in.
Your package of goodies looks scrumptious!

  20. I can hardly wait for Art and Soul. I watched the clip and know I will love the Sea Monster class.

  21. I would love for you to come teach in Nashua NH! Maybe at AC Moore or Michaels in Amherst,NH! tHEY ALSO HAVE A FEW OTHER PLACES ONE IN topsfield Mass that is very popular where I saw Tim Holtz teach a few classes and another in Portsmouth Maine where I saw Claudine Hellmuth teach. I would of coarse love you to even come closer then MA or ME. NH would be preferable for me since this is where I live but other then Michaels or AC moore I am not sure where they ever have lessons this wonderful here, recently I made a friend who has a store in Amherst, NH with two classrooms in it though I know she would love to have something like that there. The name of her place is “COLOR ME CLAYFUL”! It’s so close you could stay at my house or have dinner here!

  22. Considering I’ve been asked to take my niece to Paris in February for a fashion internship (she’s only 18), I would love it if you just happened to come to Paris to teach your visual journaling class with a Parisian theme — in February! Come on, Jill! Paris in February!! P.S. I’d be taking your Portland classes but I have to save my money — to go with my niece to Paris in February, where I’d love to take a Jill K. Berry Visual Journaling Class!!

  23. Pretty Please come to St. Louis and teach Map to Happy! 🙂

  24. I am new to Art Journaling. Haven’t tried it yet. Still in the look and see stage. So any class would be wonderful, but esp something geared twd beginners….who doubt their art-worthiness. Nobody ever comes to North Central Idaho, but you might be able to find enough people here to make it worth your while to come to Lewiston, ID. It’s 2 hrs away from me, but the nearest city of any size. Ha!

Would love to win your giveaway. I am just beginning to discover my inner artist!

  25. How about Olympia, WA? So , I don’t have to go to Portland and stay in a hotel. The SEA MONSTER JOURNAL is what I want to do! How apropos for the Puget Sound.

  26. Can’t wait for the Map to Happy class in Portland.

  27. I lived in Portland for a long time — Serena Barton is my art teacher. A few years ago I moved back to my family farmstead in Nebraska where I have plenty of time to paint and wonder about the world. How about coming to Omaha? Lincoln? Kansas City? I’d love to take your Sea Monster class. Thanks for the give-away opportunity.

  28. I am so excited to be able to take your Sea Monster Journal class in Portland! I consider myself more of a fabric person–this class will be a fun way to get out of my comfort zone! I would love for you to come back to Portland and teach your painted pages class. That also looks like a lot of fun!

  29. Would love to take the sketch class but it is sold out…
looking forward to Map to Happy.
Sorry you won’t be coming back to Portland

  30. How about a trip across the pond to the UK???
